If you’re an owner perhaps you need to think twice in adding another layer of security, a good option is to attach a gprs tracking device to keep a watchful eye of your laptop whenever and wherever you go. But if you can’t afford for a device like that then there’s no need to worry there’s a good solution in safeguarding your laptops from thieves and alike.

Although you feel secure that your laptop is in good place it’s a good practice to have an added layer of security by having a tracker attached to your laptop. Although gprs is a great choice there’s always a chance that it will be removed by the perpetrator assuming that he/she’s smart enough that such technology is attached to the laptop. The sad part is that gprs trackers costs a lot depending on the features. But you can have the functionality fully free if you installed PREY.

Prey is a software with the capability of tracking your laptops once you installed it in your system. Although the limitation of the software is that there must be an internet connection to get the tracking activated it’s a good trade-off since most sites now have hotspots on internet connection. Once your laptop is lost, the software can auto-activate to nearest open wi-fi access. If you have any questions here’s what PREY says in its site.

Prey wakes up at a specified interval and checks a URL to see if it should gather the traces and send the report. If the URL exists, Prey will simply go to sleep again. Basically, that’s it.

However, there’s two ways to run Prey: synchronized with the web control panel or in a standalone fashion.

1. Prey + Control Panel

In this case, you manage your computer state and Prey’s configuration through a web page, which also keeps track of all reports sent by Prey from your device. This is the method we recommend for most users, since you don’t have to worry about the URL thingy and you can actually “talk” to Prey by triggering different behaviours.

2. Prey Standalone

In standalone mode, the report goes directly to your inbox but it’s up to you to generate the URL to activate Prey. In this case you don’t need to sign up in Prey but you’ll have to set up the different modules by hand if you want to tune things up. This is actually the way Prey worked before version 0.3 was released.

Of course, Prey needs to have an active Internet connection to send the information. If the computer isn’t connected, Prey will attempt to connect to the nearest open wifi access point available.

In Linux/Mac, Prey can (and should) be run as root so it doesn’t depend on an active user session to run, but only on a successful boot.

If you’re having a competition to meet the deadlines of your project then you definitely know that three heads are better than one. With the help of your friends/classmates all you just need is the plan and organization to beat the deadline. But what if your friends can’t come to your house to help you? Of course collaborating online is a good idea but the problem comes when you’re not working pretty well because you can’t execute your plan and your activities are not in sync especially if you’re working with some kind of document or something.

If this is the case then what you need is the right tool to help you manage your activities and document editing in sync.

All you need is the right tool to the job and that’s where CollabEdit comes in. CollabEdit is a web application text editor where you and your friends can work with your documents in real time enabling you to edit a document remotely and see the changes you made in real time.By sending the URL of the document with your buddies. You can then see the changes that your group mates have made in realtime. The Interface is really easy and you can easily pick up the details of how to use the application without the help of a manual or reference.

There’s also a chat feature and version history which is perfect for keeping you and your work mates in getting the job done right. The Web Application is not that mature but the potential is there.

Thinking of a way to add your blog or a web page in your facebook fan page or facebook user profile? Perhaps you’ve been thinking of some advanced stuff, like learning how to program to make this happen. The good news is you can do it without any programming experience or advance configurations or tweaking to have your very own customized facebook tab of your blog/site in your profile.

Tabsite is a service that let’s you customize your facebook profile and let’s you add a customized facebook tab in your user profile or page. You just need to register and go to your tabsite account and publish the page you made and it would appear in your profile automatically.

Although this appears very easy, There’s some annoying details that you might want to know. Tabsite offers a free service of adding tabs but the tabs are hardly noticeable because the main tab is titled as “Tab Site”.

This feature is for the free service and there’s more promising features in the pro which you can avail for as low as 5$/month. The content Manager is a wysiwyg editor which you can input some details and content of your blog. Anyway please make sure to check out their instructions on how to setup your facebook account because you might miss the right setting of enabling Tabsite tabs.

Here in my country(place) I seldom saw people buy netbooks and mostly they opt to choose in buying a laptop instead of the stripped down counterpart which is a netbook. The thing is, most people usually buy laptops because they assume that netbooks are slower and not that classy when you buy them. Technically speaking netbooks are really slow compared to laptops but it really depends on the purpose on where you will use the gadget for.Netbooks are stripped down version of a laptop with less processing power and no optical drives attached(theres a portable dvd drive which you can attach). The trade-off with this one is that they tend to last longer because of a good battery life compared to laptop and a very portable, lightweight gadget which is perfect to do the basic tasks such as surfing the net and doing office paper works.

If you’re into gaming and do multimedia editing using resource hungry softwares then a laptop is best suited to do your job. Laptops today are getting powerful which could replace the desktop computer in the future.

Anyway there are versions of netbooks now which you can choose with the balance of power and portability. The next generation processors used in netbooks are getting powerful which leads to netbooks that appeals much like a laptop.

Anyway there are good sources out there which can clearly give out the details and specifications of laptops and netbooks which you can choose if you’re planning to buy one. Just make sure to buy the right one depending on the kind of work you will use the tool for. Laptops are pricey and netbooks are good if you’re low with your budget.

I posted an article before on how you can integrate google calendar with your mobile phone and get sms subscriptions to your events and schedules. Now I’m going to show you on how you can use Google calendar to do a good combo with your facebook account. We will be importing your Facebook Events and Birthdays for great fillers in your Google Calendar.

You can manually input your facebook friend’s birthday in your google calendar or you can do it smartly by using fbCAL. One of the my favorite applications in facebook because it associates your facebook calendar to one of the popular event planning, calendar software and web applications available. So if you don’t like the feel of using Google Calendar then you can choose other applications in which you can import the data.

First go to fbcal’s official website and click the button “Create your calendars Now“. Use your facebook account to login in fbCal and allow it to access your profile information and offline access.

When you’re in the main application you can choose two options. export your events and export the birthdays. Click the corresponding logo of Google Calendar and you’re done. There are times when fbCal’s export function doesn’t work so just download a copy of it and import the iCalendar File in your Google Calendar by going to Settings -> Calendar Tab -> Import Calendar. Choose the Downloaded iCalendar File then wait for this confirmation to show. If unsuccessful repeat the import process until you got it right.

If you are tired of visiting web pages by inputting their web addresses in your favorite web browser then a good option is to keep their rss feeds and read them using your favorite feed reader. But some people love the look and feel of visiting the main site itself instead of keeping track using an rss feed. If you want the best of both worlds who loves to track website while not using rss feed then why don’t you make a widget of your favorite site and track it right in your desktop?

I have a hard time giving a description of a widget that tracks a website right at your desktop, but I assure you it’s one of the best AIR apps around that you’ll be keeping in your PC.

How it Works?

Snippage works by taking a portion of a web page that you want to track and acts like a widget. Every time the part of a site updates the widget also updates making it a great substitute for rss feeds. Basically it’s like a flexible browser that you can use that is very slick and has the ability to take any forms. To understand more about snippage here’s a screenshot of it.

You just need to choose what part of the web page you want to track and drag the box where snippage will be snipping . You can then shrink the snippage browser view for it to become widget and you can drag it anywhere you like in your desktop.

You can add as many widgets you want. Just look for the upper right part of the windows for the corresponding buttons and you’re good to go. Anyway you need to have Adobe AIR in your pc for snippage to be installed.

You can also take a look at this rss desktop reader which serves the purpose of website tracking.

For students and programmers who always keep up with their busy schedule, having a tool to check if their source code is error free is a great way to save time. Usually laptops and netbooks are good testing ground to check if a source code works perfectly, but most people can’t afford to buy one. Also, working in public computer shops requires you to have an installed compiler and IDE to work with their assignment. Good thing there’s an IDE out there perfect for programmers and coders to help their assignment if they need an urgent test to their code files.

A coder’s best friend, IDEone eliminates worries of looking for a testing ground for their source code to work. What you just need is a browser and an internet connection and there it is, problem solved. You have a working IDE with a built in checker(compiler?) if your code runs error free.

How to use IDEone?

Choose language, paste code and input data (optionally), choose whether your code ought to be executed and whether it ought to be private and click submit button. Then watch your code being executed, share it with your team or friends, or run it again with new input to debug.

At the time of this writing, IDEone supports 39 programming languages and is currently expanding. It’s still in beta phase, so most languages are currently being tested. Compilation time is 10 seconds and execution is 5s. There’s a memory constraint of 256mb and reading/writing files is prohibited. Syntax highlighting and a privacy setting is available as of the moment.

If you want a heavy duty IDE you can also take a look to a list of browser based IDEs with a much smaller scope of programming languages supported.

Missing certain events? Being forgetful in greeting your friend’s birthday? Always not on time with your date? I think what you need is a carefully organized event calendar with the help of Google .

We will not be using Google’s search engine. Instead, we will use it’s Google Calendar as an SMS notification tool to keep you notified in certain events, birthday greetings and other things related to that. I’m assuming you now have a Google account to be used in Google Calendar. Log in using your account and get familiar with the interface.

The Main interface is like a big spreadsheet where you will input your scheduled greetings and plans. If you don’t understand a thing in the spreadsheet then perhaps it’s defaulted to weekly mode. You can adjust it by clicking the daily tab above the spreadsheet in the upper right corner of it. You can then click the spreadsheet to add your plans or use the links in the upper left corner for an added degree of customization.

When you are done with the preliminaries all you have to do is integrate Google calendar to your mobile phone. Click the Settings link in the upper right corner and go to mobile setup. Carefully input the fields needed and wait for the confirmation code to be sent in your mobile account. Submit your mobile code and enable SMS notifications to your events and plans. As of my experience Google does not charge you of the sms sent to you, so you can abuse the service without worry any fees.
