The word Emulator is associated with Emulation, and with emulation comes different forms and meanings. If you’ll look it up in the wiki it says something like this…

The word emulation refers to an ambition and effort to equal, excel or surpass another; to compete or rival with some degree of success, especially through imitation. It can also refer to the simulation of equipment or phenomena by artificial means, such as by software modeling.

Now that you know the concept behind emulation, then perhaps it’s much easier for me to explain emulation in the field of gaming. In layman’s term it’s “You can play your Console Games in your Pc” it’s as simple as that. But first you have to understand that not all console games are playable in your pc especially the most recent games that was released under the latest console platforms. But  in the future it will be playable for sure.

When playing games there’s  two things that you need. If you want to play in your pc, you definitely need a PC and an installer of the game. And if you want to play in your Playstation you definitely need a playstation and a game disc to play. Following this analogy in order to play console games in your pc you need the emulator software and a ROM.

I prepared a step by step instruction here on how you can play a game from Sega Genesis and play it in your PC. From this, you can easily get the idea on how you can play your favorite console game in your desktop computer. Just remember that an emulator software has a corresponding rom to be played. If you for example downloaded a Playstation emulator you can only play Playstation roms to it.

1. What you just need is to acquire an emulator software and a rom and learn how to use the two. Let’s download the emulator software first by going to this site. ( There are many good sites out there you just need to explore some of them)
2. In the sidebar find and click “Emulator” and then look again for “GENESIS” at the page and download GENS V2.14 for windows.
3. Now go back to main site again and look for “ROMS” in the sidebar and choose the “GENESIS Roms”. Browse the games there and look for interesting game you want and download it.
4. Unzip GENS V2.14 for Windows and the rom you downloaded.
5. Run GENS V2.14 for windows and then click file and Open Roms Remember the location on where you unzip it and choose the file from the list
6. Configure the controls and enjoy the game

There are many emulators out there which is free to download. Playstation and Playstation 2 emulators are good choice if you want to play your old school games. Remember that not all games are compatible so it’s good to read some online manuals and documentation so you won’t get frustrated when you’re itching to play the games.
